What is expected of me as a provisionally registered teacher

Provisional registration is a fundamental step in developing the expertise needed to flourish as a teacher. Induction bridges the journey from being an initial teacher education student to being fully registered and employed as a teacher in Scotland.

Teaching is highly complex work and being a provisionally registered teacher requires you to balance broadening your foundational knowledge base with enhancing your subject and pedagogical expertise. As a professional, you are best placed to determine and direct your own development and seek the support and challenge you need.

Working collaboratively

You will:

  • build a relationship of trust with your supporter(s) and reviewer and engage in an open, supportive and challenging climate for discussion
  • work collaboratively with other people involved in the induction process

Recording progress

You will:

  • demonstrate the professional values, commitment, knowledge and understanding, and skills and abilities in the Standard for Full Registration
  • regularly maintain relevant records adhering to data protection legislation and keep your personal details up to date
  • set individual targets for teaching blocks and evidence your progress on MyGTCS by recording: observations, learning activities, professional discussions, development plans, key strengths and areas for development where your progress is assessed as causing concern or unsatisfactory at the end of your first teaching block, you will need to evidence your progress in 2 further teaching blocks rather than 1

Sharing information

You will:

  • make associations in MyGTCS with a reviewer
  • make associations with a supporter. You must do this if you are on TIS and if you are on Flexible Route you are encouraged to establish a relationship with a supporter and associate with them on MyGTCS
  • make associations with anyone else that you need to – this may be confirmed by your employer or placement provider e.g. such as with a probation manager
  • share the information you have recorded on MyGTCS with your supporter at the end of a teaching block for them to include a comment about your progress. Your employer or placement provider will confirm any other associations you need to make, such as with a probation manager
  • share all the information you have recorded on MyGTCS with your reviewer when you believe you have met the requirements for full registration
