Teacher preparation has 2 distinct phases in Scotland

  • The first is initial teacher education.
  • The second is an induction period to the teaching profession which is foundational to provisionally registered teachers’ professional growth and preparation.

Provisionally registered teachers have successfully achieved a teaching qualification but have not yet completed an induction period of assessed teaching practice.

GTC Scotland's Provisional Registration and Probationary Policy 2023 sets out the requirements for individual teachers to progress from provisional to full registration.

Provisionally registered teachers consist of 3 groups

  1. those that have qualified in Scotland,
  1. those with an equivalent qualification gained outside of Scotland
  1. fully registered teachers seeking registration in an additional registration category.

Induction

Induction is a period of assessed teaching practice. The purpose of induction is to achieve the Standard for Full Registration and receive a recommendation for full registration to GTC Scotland by a fully registered teacher, usually a headteacher.

Over a period of induction, the experiences, support and personal reflection undertaken by a provisionally registered teacher should result in professional growth across all 3 parts of the Standard for Full Registration - being a teacher in Scotland, knowledge and understanding, and skills and abilities.

Provisionally registered teachers with no previous teaching experience require a minimum of 1 academic year of induction.

There are 2 routes to full registration:

  • the Scottish Government’s funded pathway - the Teacher Induction Scheme
  • the Flexible Route.

We require teachers qualified outside of Scotland, teachers opting to work in the independent school sector and fully registered teachers adding to their registration categories to take the Flexible Route.
