You can find further information on submitting your application, and the application forms, on our How to apply for additional registration article.
Academic requirements
Credit points can be gathered from undergraduate and/or postgraduate degree level study where the credit is of direct relevance to the teaching of the subject for which an application is being made.
The minimum academic requirements for registration in Secondary (Subject) Education is:
- 80 Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework (SCQF) credit points in the secondary subject with:
- at least 40 credit points must be SCQF level 7
- at least 40 credit points must be SCQF level 8
Particular subjects may have specific academic requirements. You can find out more on on the Secondary teaching page.
If you have completed at least 40 credit points at SCQF level 7, or above, you can still apply and will be considered for Provisional (Conditional) Registration. If successful, you will have 3 years to complete the remaining credit points required.
Evidence required
When you apply for Provisional Registration in the additional secondary subject, you will need to submit evidence of the academic study that you have completed that is relevant to the additional subject.
We can only accept official documentation as evidence of academic study.
Your relevant study was part of a degree or other degree-level programme
If your relevant study was part of a degree or other degree-level programme you must submit one of the following as evidence:
- If the relevancy to your additional subject is clear from the degree title (e.g. the additional subject is Mathematics and the degree title is MSc in Mathematics) and there are no specific subject requirements, you can submit your degree certificate as evidence
- If the relevancy to your additional subject is not clear from the degree title (e.g. the additional subject is English and the degree title is BA in Combined Studies) or there are specific subject requirements, you can submit your academic transcript(s) as evidence*

- and the number of credit points awarded
Your relevant study was both
For both degrees and stand-alone modules, if it is not clear from the module titles that these are relevant to the additional subject you must also submit module descriptors.
