Minimum induction requirements
Provisionally registered teachers with no previous teaching experience
Recording progress
- Provisionally registered teachers must record their journey from provisional to full registration on GTC Scotland’s MyGTCS platform. Advice on what to record on MyGTCS will be updated and made available in the coming weeks.
- Provisionally registered teachers must ensure they have recorded their development plans and associated actions in MyGTCS. All provisionally registered teachers should do this as early as possible in their teaching block. Individuals on TIS should do this by week 3 of their first teaching block. We require a minimum of 1 entry in each of the 3 areas of the Standard for Full Registration (being a teacher in Scotland, knowledge and understanding, professional skills and abilities). Provisionally registered teachers must record progress related to these within the teaching block.
- A provisionally registered teacher should record a minimum of 4 learning activities in each of the 3 areas of the Standard for Full Registration split evenly across teaching blocks. This increases to 6 where there is cause for concern.
We recommend that a provisionally registered teacher with no previous teaching experience requests a progress report at least twice as they work towards Full Registration. This increases to 3 times where progress is identified as unsatisfactory or a cause for concern. For provisionally registered teachers on TIS the expected dates of teaching block reports are refreshed each year.
Sharing information
- Provisionally registered teachers must make associations in MyGTCS with a reviewer.
- Provisionally registered teachers on TIS must also make associations with a supporter.
- Provisionally registered teachers on the Flexible Route are also encouraged to establish a relationship with a supporter and associate with them on MyGTCS.
In some situations, the supporter and the reviewer will be the same person. Individual employers or placement providers will confirm any other associations individuals need to make, such as with a probation manager.
Teaching service
- We require a minimum of 1 academic year (approximately 190 days) of assessed teaching practice (a maximum of 3 years is available to achieve this)
We understand that absence can occur for a range of reasons and does not necessarily impact on an individual demonstrating they meet the Standard for Full Registration (SFR). If absence is longer than around 20 days in an academic year (approximately 190 days) and means that an individual has not yet demonstrated they meet the SFR, a teacher will need to complete further assessed teaching practice to make up for the days missed. For those on TIS, this would result in a recommendation for extension to TIS.
Teaching that aligns with the category of Provisional Registration
- Provisionally registered teachers must undertake teaching that aligns with their category of Provisional Registration. This should form the majority of a provisionally registered teacher’s teaching service and class contact should align directly with their category of registration. Teaching should take place with classes of learners rather than one-to-one teaching. For secondary education teachers, we also recommend ensuring teaching experience during induction of certificate classes in their subject.
- Provisionally registered teachers on TIS must have a maximum class contact time in their category of registration of 0.82 FTE (0.8 FTE maximum on average across the academic session).
This class contact time is in place to allow a reviewer to make a considered assessment as to whether a provisionally registered teacher is meeting the Standard for Full Registration in their category of registration. It is also in place in recognition of the practical impact of timetabling arrangements particularly in secondary schools.
A small proportion of a provisionally registered teacher’s assessed teaching practice (e.g. up to half a day per week for the TIS) may be timetabled by their school in another context. For example, an individual with provisional registration in secondary art education may teach art in a primary context for half a day and include this within their profile.
Dual registration
Individuals who have completed a dual teaching qualification will be provisionally registered in 2 subjects. We recommend that these provisionally registered teachers have a 50:50 split in their class contact time between the 2 subjects. This could extend to a 70:30 split to allow flexibility. For those completing induction via TIS, the total class contact time should be close to 0.8 FTE to allow reasonable opportunity to teach in both subjects. We recommend ensuring experience of teaching certificate classes in at least 1 of the 2 subjects.
Observations
Provisionally registered teachers should be observed teaching 9 times by a fully registered teacher. This extends to 10 where concerns have been raised. For provisionally registered teachers on TIS 5 of these 9 observations must take place in teaching block 1.
The provisionally registered teacher’s reviewer must conduct at least 1 of the 9 observations.
Observations of teaching practice must relate to the provisionally registered teacher’s category of registration.
Professional discussions
Regular professional discussions must take place. Provisionally registered teachers on TIS should record 24 supporter meetings as professional discussions in MyGTCS, split evenly over the teaching blocks.
Provisionally registered teachers with previous teaching experience
Recording progress
- Provisionally registered teachers must record their journey from provisional to full registration on GTC Scotland’s MyGTCS platform.
- Provisionally registered teachers should record previous teaching experience in MyGTCS with sufficient detail for a reviewer to assess achievement of the overall minimum of 1 academic year (approximately 190 days) of teaching. We understand that particularly where teachers have worked in countries outside Scotland, teaching experience may not align directly with the category of registration with GTC Scotland. For this reason, any teaching experience should be recorded.
- Where previous teaching experience is less than the minimum requirement of 1 academic session, a provisionally registered teacher should record all previous teaching service prior to beginning a new teaching block.
- A provisionally registered teacher should summarise key strengths and areas for development in MyGTCS and establish individual targets for teaching blocks.
There is no fixed minimum timeframe for requesting a reviewer considers a recommendation for full registration.
Sharing information
- Provisionally registered teachers must make associations in MyGTCS with a reviewer.
- Provisionally registered teachers on TIS must also make associations with a supporter.
- Provisionally registered teachers on Flexible Route are encouraged to associate with supporter(s).
- Provisionally registered teachers on TIS must also make associations with a supporter.
In some situations, the supporter and the reviewer will be the same person. Individual employers or placement providers will confirm any other associations individuals need to make, such as with a probation manager.
Observations
- An observation by a reviewer at least once is required. For this observation, the provisionally registered teacher must be teaching the category in which they are provisionally registered and looking to achieve full registration
