How to apply for additional registration
Fully registered teachers are already meeting mandatory teaching standards. A great deal of trust is already placed in you as a registered teacher.
You should see additional registration as an enhancement of what you already do. It also allows you to follow your interests which may change over time and even increase your employment opportunities.
In summary the 5 steps of the additional registration process are as follows.
1. Be fully registered
You need to be fully registered in a category of registration related to school education –
- Primary Education
- Secondary (Subject) Education
- Additional Support Needs.
There need to be no concerns about your teaching.
2. Have the study you need
You need to have all or some of the academic subject study for the additional registration you want.
There may be specific academic requirements, depending on the subject or category you are seeking additional registration in. Please review the academic requirements for your specific scenario before submitting an application for Provisional Registration:
- Primary teachers looking to add registration in Secondary (Subject) Education
- Secondary teachers looking to add registration in Primary Education
- Secondary teachers looking to add an additional subject
- Primary and secondary teachers looking to register in Additional Support Needs
3. Gain Provisional Registration
You need to gain Provisional or Provisional (Conditional) Registration from us.
You must find a headteacher or senior leader with current Full (General) Registration with GTC Scotland who is willing to act as your reviewer and recommend you for registration.
Your reviewer must only recommend you once they are satisfied you have met the Standard for Provisional Registration (SPR) in your additional registration. You can both use the toolkits provided to identify any areas of the SPR that you have not fully met yet, and develop a professional learning plan:
Submit an application for Provisional Registration
Once your reviewer is happy you have met the SPR, you will submit the Recommendation for Provisional Registration form, completed by the headteacher or senior leader who is acting as your reviewer.
Completed applications should be submitted to gtcs@gtcs.org.uk with the subject line “Additional registration application”.

Recommendation for additional registration
Once you have submitted an application, we will assess your application and you will be issued with the decision.
- If you are successful, Provisional Registration in your new registration area will be added to your registration with GTC Scotland.
- If you are awarded Provisional (Conditional) Registration you will not gain Full Registration until you have also met the academic condition on your registration.
4. Undertake assessed teaching practice
It is important that you gain teaching experience, essentially a period of induction, in your additional registration in a context where the headteacher or senior leader has sufficient opportunity to observe and evaluate your teaching, and ultimately recommend you for Full Registration.
We recommend that you complete the equivalent of 20 days of service in the school of the headteacher/senior leader who is recommending you for registration, and that you develop and reflect on a learning plan to support your progression towards additional registration.
Your reviewer must have observed your teaching at least once before they recommend you for Full Registration.
We expect that as a fully registered teacher you already have deep knowledge of the Standard for Full Registration and ensure that you undertake effective professional dialogue with your headteacher or senior leader. They will work with you to determine when you are demonstrating satisfactory standards in your additional subject or category.
5. Be recommended for Full Registration
After being awarded Provisional Registration, you will then need to be recommended for Full Registration after completing a recommended 20 days of teaching service to gain Full Registration in your additional subject or category.
We then review your information and recommendation and award Full Registration.
