Additional Support Needs registration requirements
Additional Support Needs (ASN) registration covers the 3 to 18 years age range.
To register in ASN you need to hold current Provisional or Full Registration in Primary Education or a Secondary (Subject) Education.
If you hold Provisional (Conditional) Registration you will require to meet the condition attached to that registration before you apply to add registration in ASN.
You also need to hold an appropriate ASN award. This award will need to:
- be equivalent to a minimum of 60 Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) credit points
- be at SCQF level 9 or above
- have included courses/ modules with a sufficiently broad and general content to cover pupils with a range of additional support needs, for example the Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma in Inclusive Practice
- have been completed (you should have received your award certificate) before starting your application for registration in ASN.
If you are currently studying towards a Postgraduate Diploma or Master’s degree in ASN you may apply once you have completed sufficient credit to meet the above requirement – i.e. you will not need to exit with a PGCert in order to apply. You must request a letter from your university to confirm this.

Registration in Additional Support Needs (ASN) covers the 3 to 18 years age range.
Teaching is complex work and all teachers are expected to understand teaching learners with additional support needs. Working as a specific teacher of additional support needs (ASN) requires assurance that you have the specialist knowledge and skills to work in this context. That assurance is provided in part, and as a foundation, of you having a relevant qualification.
If you are a fully registered teacher in primary or secondary and wish to work in additional support needs contexts, you can gain additional registration in ASN. If you hold provisional (conditional) registration you will require to meet the condition attached to that registration and gain either provisional or full registration before you apply to add registration in ASN.
You also need to hold an appropriate ASN award. The minimum academic requirements to register in ASN is 60 Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) credit points at level 9 or above.
Your ASN award needs to:
- have included courses/ modules with a sufficiently broad and general content to cover pupils with a range of additional support needs, for example the Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma in Inclusive Practice
- have been completed (you should have received your award certificate) before starting your application for registration in ASN.
