Making a recommendation

When a provisional registrant is ready to request a recommendation, they will submit their request to any associated reviewers on their MyGTCS account.

If an associated provisional registrant has submitted a request for recommendation from you, you will receive notification both by email and in MyGTCS to let you know that you have a pending request for recommendation. Once logged in to MyGTCS you can review any requests in the 'Assocations' area, found in the navigation bar, or directly through your notifications on MyGTCS.

The submitted request for Full Recommendation will include the provisionally registered teacher’s profile and any additional notes. Once you have reviewed the request, you can submit a recommendation along with any comments.

Declarations

When making a recommendation, you will make one of the following declarations

Recommendation for Full Registration

By recommending the provisional registrant for Full Registration, you are declaring that:

  • They have demonstrated that they meet the Standard for Full Registration.
  • They have completed a minimum of 1 academic year (approximately 190 days) (or the equivalent) of teaching service.
  • You are a headteacher or school leader and hold full GTC Scotland registration.
  • You have made a face-to-face observation of their teaching in the category of registration relating to this provisional registration.

Recommendation for removal

By recommending for the removal of registration, you are declaring that:

  • You consider that the professional competence of the provisional registrant falls below the standards expected of a registered teacher.
  • You understand that to make a recommendation for removal of registration, you must submit a Case Overview Report, supporting reports and supporting evidence to GTC Scotland.

Teacher Induction Scheme (TIS) specific

Recommendation for TIS extension (where competence is a factor)

By recommending the provisional registrant for extension where competence is a factor, you are declaring that:

  • You consider the provisional registrant to be making progress towards the Standard for Full Registration
  • You believe that they need an extended TIS placement to provide them the opportunity to evidence that they have met all areas of the Standard for Full Registration.
  • You understand that a Case Overview Report, supporting reports and supporting evidence must be submitted to GTC Scotland if the provisionally registered teacher challenges this TIS extension recommendation.
  • You understand that a recommendation for TIS placement extension can be made only once and, with the evidence available to you at this time, you believe this to be the only TIS extension placement to be allocated to this teacher in this provisional registration category.

Recommendation for TIS extension (service only)

By recommending the provisional registrant for extension where competence service is the only factor, you are declaring that:

  • You consider the provisional registrant to be making progress towards the Standard for Full Registration.
  • You believe the provisional registrant needs further time to meet the requirement for a minimum of 1 academic year (approximately 190 days) (or the equivalent) of teaching service.
