Withdrawals and deferrals
Withdrawals
If you decide to withdraw from the Teacher Induction Scheme (TIS) prior to entering the classroom, email gtcs@gtcs.org.uk with the subject line ‘TIS Withdrawal’. Please include your:
- full name
- date of birth
- allocated local authority (if you have been allocated) or Higher Education Institution (if you are withdrawing prior to allocation)
- reason for withdrawing
Please inform your local authority (or Higher Education Institute) of your decision. We will confirm your withdrawal with them before taking any action. If you choose to withdraw from TIS, you can complete your induction through the Flexible Route. You cannot return to TIS once you have withdrawn.
Deferrals
You can request to defer your probation year before and after you have been allocated to a local authority – between May and August.
Deferral is automatically granted if you:
- are pregnant
- are not going to complete your Initial Teacher Education in time to start TIS (we are advised by your HEI)
Deferrals are decided by a GTC Scotland Panel if you:
- have a confirmed and ongoing medical condition
- have exceptional personal circumstances (decided on a case-by-case basis)
- are going on to further studies related to education and a career in teaching
Please note that we would normally require evidence to support a deferral request e.g. medical evidence of an ongoing medical condition or an offer letter for further studies related to education and a career in teaching.
No deferral is granted if you:
- wish to travel or teach abroad
- are going on to further studies not related to education and a career in teaching
- are pursuing alternative career options
- wish to teach in the independent sector
- are dissatisfied with your local authority or school allocation
If you are pregnant, you will need to obtain an MAT B1 form from your doctor or a letter from your midwife to confirm your pregnancy. Include a scan of this form when you submit the deferral form.
To request a deferral, complete the deferral form and send it with the subject line ‘Deferral request’ to gtcs@gtcs.org.uk.
Withdrawals
If you decise to withdraw from the Teacher Induction Scheme, you can either follow the Flexible Route to gain Full Registration or choose to leave teaching.
Once you have withdrawn from the Teacher Induction Scheme you cannot return to it, and you cannot retrospectively submit a deferral request.
Student teachers
If you decide to withdraw from the Teacher Induction Scheme (TIS) prior to entering the classroom, email gtcs@gtcs.org.uk with the subject line ‘TIS Withdrawal’. Please include your:
- full name

- allocated local authority (if you have been allocated) or Higher Education Institution (if you are withdrawing prior to allocation)
- reason for withdrawing

Provisionally registered teachers
Once you have began your induction, if you are thinking about withdrawing from the Teacher Induction Scheme and following the Flexible Route, speak to your local authority probation manager.
Find out more about the Flexible Route.
You must discuss your decision to leave TIS with your employer and probation manager before submitting a withdrawal request. Either you or your probation manager (on your behalf) can submit a withdrawal request, using the Teacher Induction Scheme withdrawal form.
Deferrals
If you have not completed your Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programme yet, contact your Higher Education Institution (HEI) to request a deferral.
If you have completed your ITE programme and are unable to take up or continue your induction year, you can contact us to request a deferral. You can request a deferral up until the end of November.
