It is a legal requirement for all teachers working in Scottish schools to be registered with GTC Scotland.

Higher Education Institutions deliver programmes of Initial Teacher Education. We accredit these programmes to ensure that they align with the Standard for Provisional Registration for teachers. Each programme is reaccredited after 5 years to ensure that standards are maintained.

Applying for Provisional Registration

Eligible student teachers complete the Student Application Form during the autumn semester. This is used to gather details for Provisional Registration with us and preferences for the allocation of student placements.

The Student Teacher Code has been prepared to provide you with guidance on how to conduct yourself professionally and is designed to complement the Code of Conduct in place for your university.

ITE profile

The ITE profile has been developed to give student teachers a place where they can record their strengths and development needs as they work towards the Standard for Provisional Registration (SPR) and plan for the Standard for Full Registration (SFR).

Student placement process

The student teacher placement process is a national placement programme, which includes a system that enables the automatic matching of student teachers to school placement offers throughout Scotland.
