Once you are a fully registered teacher it is possible to gain registration in an additional secondary education subject or even a different category of registration.

Teachers must teach who and what they are qualified to teach.

Many teachers have more than one registration. This can offer increased employment opportunities as well as recognise the individual development teachers undertake either due to their specific circumstances or through following their own interests.

When it is supported well, additional registration can also be a very practical solution for teacher employers to address specific recruitment issues.

Additional registration has been referred to as ‘professional registration’. Using this term has been confusing and from now on we will refer to the process fully registered teachers take to gain registration in another subject or category of registration as additional registration. This recognises it as a process that some teachers choose to take after their initial registration with us.

Why additional registration is needed

Teacher registration matters and so does your registration category or categories.

Registration of teachers in Scotland is rooted in law and fundamentally linked to qualifications. In essence qualifications inform registration and registration guides employment.

It is important that teachers teach who and what they are qualified to teach. Registration is public information and is a key element of ensuring continued trust in Scotland's teaching profession.
