Provisional registration profile: Teacher Induction Scheme minimum requirements
This article summarises the minimum expectations of profiles for participants in the Scottish Government’s Teacher Induction Scheme (TIS).
While not requirements for Full Registration, these expectations are agreed by local authorities and GTC Scotland. They are specific to TIS participants. You should address any queries to the local authority probation manager. Dates may vary at a local level.
Teaching block 1 (August to January)
- Development plans: 1 development plan created at the start of the teaching block which is informed by the ITE profile and reviewed at the end of the teaching block. The plan includes a minimum of 1 entry in each area of the Standard for Full Registration (Being a Teacher in Scotland; Professional Knowledge and Understanding; Professional Skills and Abilities).
- Professional discussions: 12 supporter meetings (1 per week)
- Observations: 5 observed teaching sessions
- Learning activities: 2 entries in each of the 3 areas of the Standard for Full Registration (Being a Teacher in Scotland; Professional Knowledge and Understanding; Professional Skills and Abilities)
Progress report outcomes
There are 3 possible outcomes from your progress report at the end of teaching block 1. Your reviewer (the headteacher) can assess your progress as:
- Satisfactory
- Cause for Concern
- Unsatisfactory
If your progress is identified as Satisfactory, you will be asked to complete one further teaching block: Teaching block 2 (January to June)
If your progress is identified as Cause for Concern or Unsatisfactory, you will be asked to complete a further two teaching blocks: Teaching block 2 (January to March) and teaching block 3 (April to June).
Teaching block 2
Your progress was assessed as Satisfactory (January to June)
- Development plans: 1 development plan created at the start of the teaching block and reviewed at the end. The plan includes a minimum of 1 entry in each area of the Standard for Full Registration (Being a Teacher in Scotland; Professional Knowledge and Understanding; Professional Skills and Abilities).
- Professional discussions: 12 supporter meetings (1 per week)
- Observations: 4 observed teaching sessions
- Learning activities: 2 entries in each of the 3 areas of the Standard for Full Registration (Being a Teacher in Scotland; Professional Knowledge and Understanding; Professional Skills and Abilities)
Your progress was assessed as Cause for Concern or Unsatisfactory (January to March)
- Development plans: 1 development plan created at the start of the teaching block and reviewed at the end. The plan includes a minimum of 1 entry in each area of the Standard for Full Registration (Being a Teacher in Scotland; Professional Knowledge and Understanding; Professional Skills and Abilities)
- Professional discussions: 8 supporter meetings (1 per week)
- Observations: 3 observed teaching sessions
- Learning activities: 2 entries in each of the 3 areas of the Standard for Full Registration (Being a Teacher in Scotland; Professional Knowledge and Understanding; Professional Skills and Abilities)
Teaching block 3 (April to June)
If the outcome of your progress report at the end of teaching block 1 was ‘Satisfactory’, you are not required to complete a third teaching block. Your teaching block 2 will run from January to June.
- Development plans: 1 development plan created at the start of the teaching block and reviewed at the end. The plan includes a minimum of 1 entry in each area of the Standard for Full Registration (Being a Teacher in Scotland; Professional Knowledge and Understanding; Professional Skills and Abilities)
- Professional discussions: 6 supporter meetings (1 per week)
- Observations: 3 observed teaching sessions
- Learning activities: 2 entries in each of the 3 areas of the Standard for Full Registration (Being a Teacher in Scotland; Professional Knowledge and Understanding; Professional Skills and Abilities)
