I wondered if you could tell me how to find out the number of Science probationer teachers currently working in schools in 2024-25?

Response

I refer to your request for information dated 18 September 2024 (FOI 24-25/42) in which you asked for “the number of Science probationer teachers currently working in schools in 2024-25” which we have handled under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act (FOISA).

On 18 September, we requested clarification from you on the registration category which would apply to this request, and you specified that you are interested in the “Biology with Science, Chemistry with Science” and “Physics with Science” categories as they appear on the Register of Teachers.

We have interpreted your request to be for the number of provisionally registered teachers with the registration category of Biology with Science, Chemistry with Science and Physics with Science who were allocated to a local authority under the Teacher Induction Scheme (TIS) for the 2024/25 registration year.

I have provided this information in Table 1 within this response as data extracted on 19 September 2024. Please note that these figures are subject to change over time due to the addition or amendment of placements by local authorities. Furthermore, we cannot confirm that each individual is currently working in the schools they were allocated under TIS. You will see that I have not provided the exact low number as disclosing this could enable individuals to be identified. This would breach the data protection principles set out in data protection legislation. FOISA does not require us to provide this sort of information as it is exempt under section 38(1)(b).

Table 1: The number of provisionally registered teachers with the registration category of Biology with Science, Chemistry with Science and Physics with Science (or a combination of) who were allocated to a local authority under the Teacher Induction Scheme (TIS) for the 2024/25 registration year as data extracted on 19 September 2024

Additionally, we have included the number of provisionally registered teachers with the registration category of Biology with Science, Chemistry with Science and Physics with Science not currently allocated under TIS. Again, we cannot confirm that these individuals are currently working in schools.

Table 2: The number of provisionally registered teachers with the registration category of Biology with Science, Chemistry with Science and Physics appearing on the Register of Teachers as data extracted on 19 September 2024
