Response

I refer to your request for information dated 13 March 2024 (FOI 23-24/96) in which you asked for information related to the funding of the General Teaching Council for Scotland. Specifically, you asked for “the amount of funding received from the government for the following tax years (20/21,21/22,22/23).”

I have provided this information in the tables below which is based on the financial year of GTC Scotland which runs from 1 April to 31 March of the following year. Please note that GTC Scotland is independent from government and its statutory, legal functions are funded by the registration fees which its registrants - teachers and college lecturers - pay.

However, there are instances when GTC Scotland receives grant funding from the Scottish Government to support particular projects. Specifically, the Measuring Quality in Initial Teacher Education (MQuiTE) project researched teacher education graduates from 2017/18 as they progressed through the first five years of their career. Additionally, as part of the Covid-19 education recovery programme, GTC Scotland received Scottish Government funding to provide enhanced support to probationary teachers and supporters of probationary teachers.

Additionally, GTC Scotland invoices the Scottish Government for certain contracted services. Firstly, for administering certain aspects of the Teacher Induction Scheme which guarantees a one-year training post in a local authority to every eligible student graduating with a teaching qualification from one of Scotland’s Higher Education Institutes. Secondly, an annual charge for providing information to prospective Scottish teachers via the Teach in Scotland website hosted by the Scottish Government. Finally, for leading on a national policy initiative to increase racial diversity within the teaching profession.
