This FAQ is for pre-application teachers who qualified outside of Scotland.

What are the possible outcomes of the assessment of my application?

There are four possible outcomes of the assessment of your application:

1. Full Registration

This type of registration will be awarded if:

  • you meet the teacher education and academic study requirements for registration in one or more of the available GTC Scotland registration categories and
  • we have received confirmation of employment covering a minimum of one academic session of teaching service (or its equivalent: approximately 190 days); and
  • your headteacher or senior leader currently holds Full (General) Registration with GTC Scotland and they have made a recommendation for Full Registration via the Flexible Route Profile form.

2. Provisional Registration

This type of registration will be awarded if:

  • we have confirmation of employment covering a minimum of one academic session of teaching service (or its equivalent: approximately 190 days); and
  • your headteacher or senior leader does not currently hold Full (General) Registration with GTC Scotland.

Or

  • if we have not been able to obtain confirmation of employment covering a minimum of one academic session of teaching service (or its equivalent: approximately 190 days).

Further information about the requirements for Full Registration can be found in the provisionally registered teacher section of our website.

Provisionally registered teachers are permitted to teach in Scotland, however, they need to complete their probation and meet the Standard for Full registration within 3 years of becoming registered.

3. Provisional (Conditional) Registration

This type of registration is awarded if you do not fully meet the academic study requirements for registration in the secondary education subject covered by your teacher education.

Provisionally conditionally registered teachers are permitted to teach in Scotland, however, they need to fulfil the condition(s) within 3 years of becoming registered.

Please note, If you are awarded Provisional (Conditional) Registration you may also have a period of teaching service to complete. This will happen if one of the scenarios outlined under 2. applies in your case.

4. Refusal of Registration

If your application for registration is refused this means that you have not met the academic study and/or teacher education requirements for registration with GTC Scotland and the shortfall is deemed so significant that we are unable to award Provisional (Conditional) Registration.

You will receive full reasons for this decision in writing.
