This FAQ is for pre-application teachers who qualified outside of Scotland.

Is Full Registration a possible outcome of the assessment?

Full Registration cannot immediately be awarded at the point of assessment.

All teachers in Scotland are required to be recommended for Full Registration by a headteacher (or other school leader) who currently holds Full (General) Registration with GTC Scotland. This recommendation is made via MyGTCS after the teacher has gained Provisional Registration and completed the minimum period of teaching.

The minimum period of teaching for teachers in Scotland that leads to Full Registration is one academic session of teaching service (or its equivalent, approximately 190 days). For teachers qualified outside Scotland, this can include teaching service completed prior to registration with GTC Scotland.

Further information about the requirements for gaining Full Registration can be found in the provisionally registered teacher section of our website.

You will be able to record your previous teaching service once you have been awarded registration via the MyGTCS platform. Provisionally registered teachers are permitted to teach in Scotland, however, they need to complete the minimum period of teaching and meet the Standard for Full registration within 3 years of becoming registered.
