How will my registration category link to employment opportunities in Scotland?
Our Register is a professional Register and not an employment based one. All individuals who meet our registration requirements can register with us.
Registrants do not have to be actively employed as a teacher or live in Scotland to be registered with GTC Scotland. We have no role in the recruitment of teachers.
Whilst GTC Scotland can grant registration in a wide range of subjects, where a subject is not normally taught in schools in Scotland, we encourage applicants to undertake their own research in relation to employment opportunities in a subject before applying for registration. This is important because teachers must be employed in a role that aligns with their registration category. Further information about this is provided in the knowledge base for employers.
Most local authority posts are advertised on myjobscotland. Independent schools advertise posts on the TES and SCIS websites. Information about subjects in which the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) offers awards can be found on their website. Independent schools may teach subjects which are not offered by the SQA – the Scottish Council of Independent Schools (SCIS) represents the majority of these schools and provides a list of these schools and their website addresses.
