Registration
GTC Scotland manages the Register of Teachers which contains details of every teacher and college lecturer qualified to teach in Scotland. The Register of Teachers can be used by members of the public to check a teacher and lecturers’ registration status and by employers as proof of registration.
It is a legal requirement for all teachers working in Scottish schools to be registered with GTC Scotland. In 2018, there was a national agreement that all lecturers working in Scotland’s colleges would register with GTC Scotland. A national programme of registration is underway to register lecturers in Scotland’s colleges.
Individuals on the Register can only teach in accordance with their registration category.
There are four main registration categories:
- Primary
- Secondary (Subject)
- Further Education
- Additional Support Needs.
When teachers who qualified outside Scotland apply for registration with GTC Scotland meet the requirements, registration will be awarded in Full or Provisionally. Teachers who hold Full Registration in Primary or Secondary (Subject) can add additional subjects/sectors to their registration.
