Professional Learning modules

This series of three modules is designed for self-study or to facilitate discussion with your colleagues.

The modules contain videos, readings, activities and reflective questions for you to work through. They also include workbooks that can be downloaded and used to support your learning as you progress through the online materials. This can be a useful way to record your engagement as evidence of Professional Learning for Professional Review and Development (PRD) or Professional Update.

Module 1 - Exploring learning for sustainability in the Professional Standards for teachers

By completing module one you will:

  • Understand the nature and context for learning for sustainability in Scotland and globally, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • Explore your values and perspectives in the context of learning for sustainability
  • Review teaching and learning approaches that support learning for sustainability
  • Critically consider how to take a learning for sustainability approach in your professional practice
  • Reflect on the impact of this module on your professional practice

Module 2 - Learning for sustainability in the Professional Standards: taking a deeper dive

By completing module two you will:

  • Explore and critically reflect on pedagogical approaches that support LfS
  • Examine and critically reflect on opportunities and approaches for evaluating the impacts of LfS
  • Consider your role in developing a learning community approach to LfS in the context of the Professional Standards
  • Reflect on the impact of approaches to LfS on you, your learners and colleagues
  • Reflect on the impact of this module on your professional practice

Module 3 - Leading on learning for sustainability

By completing this online learning module you will:

  • Critically examine the nature of a whole-setting approach to LfS and the relevant international and national policy contexts
  • Consider your role and that of others in bringing about change
  • Reflect on your setting’s position in its journey towards a whole-setting approach
  • Critically examine the benefits and challenges of a learning community approach to LfS
  • Develop an action plan for change

Local authority perspective

David Maxwell, Education Officer at Dumfries and Galloway Council, shared a local authority perspective on learning for sustainability and supporting improvement planning. This drop-in was held on 23 March 2023 and had a focus on ‘Learning for Sustainability and the National Improvement Framework’.
