Key people in the Teacher Induction Scheme
There are a few key people who are fundamental to the Teacher Induction Scheme experience. Each has their own unique role and set of responsibilities. Responsibilities may vary between local authorities. If there are issues concerning the support you are receiving, please contact your local authority probation manager.
Your in-school supporter is a key figure in your development as a probationer, acting as your main support within the school.
Supporters have a responsibility for helping you to decide on your initial Professional Learning experiences and providing you with regular support and feedback.
They are expected to:
- get to know you professionally and personally
- create an open, supportive and challenging climate for discussion
- co-ordinate and manage your Professional Learning experiences
- monitor and evaluate progress through observed teaching sessions
- ensure that opportunities are provided to address your professional development needs
- provide pastoral support
- oversee the development, implementation and review of your action plans and probationer profile
- monitor and evaluate the quality and effectiveness of the school support programme
- encourage you to reflect on your teaching and evaluate pupil learning
- complete, in conjunction with the headteacher, your interim and final profile
- liaise with your local authority probation manager
The headteacher works in conjunction with the local authority and the supporter to ensure that arrangements are in place for accommodating you in school.
Their role includes
- seeking to ensure that you get the opportunity of a varied teaching commitment
- enabling you and your supporter to have time to discuss progress, ensuring access to appropriate professional development activities
- completing, in conjunction with the supporter, your interim and final profiles
The school is expected to prepare a probation information file/pack including:
- school aims, ethos and mission statement
- school routines and administration arrangements
- school policies and procedures
- resources and facilities
- school induction programme
- staff list
- health and safety information
- extra-curricular activities
- parental contact
- information about where to locate information related to relevant legislation or codes
Most local authorities have a designated member of staff who is responsible for organising probationer teachers’ professional development and for checking that interim and final profile are completed and submitted to us.
Probation managers are in close contact with your supporter and us.
The introductory session with your probation manager will ground you in the basic requirements of your probation year. There may be a series of local authority sessions, enabling face-to-face contact with other probationers in your area.

We are the independent regulatory and professional body whose role it is to ensure that Scotland’s high standards of education are maintained and developed.
We have a responsibility for managing the probation service and ultimately deciding whether you are awarded Full Registration.
We support probationers by
- collaborating with local authorities to ensure a consistent experience for all probationers across Scotland
- constantly reviewing the probation process to ensure the needs of all involved are being met
- providing guidance
We are responsible for
- GTC Scotland’s Registration Rules
- control of the process of converting Provisional Registration into Full Registration
- maintaining the Professional Standards for Scotland’s Teachers
