Teacher Induction Scheme

Full request

I would be very grateful if you could supply the number of probationer teachers (those on the Teacher Induction Scheme or otherwise completing their probationary year) who started in August 2025, broken down by each local authority area in Scotland, and further separated into primary and secondary sectors.

If possible, please provide the data in a tabular format (e.g., spreadsheet or table) listing all 32 local authorities.

If this information is already published or available on your website, please direct me to the relevant source. Otherwise, I would appreciate a full response within the statutory 20 working days.

It would also be helpful if you could provide the contact telephone number/email address for each local authority probationer co-ordinator to allow me to make contact with them regarding a project I am currently working on.

Response

We refer to your request for information (FOI 25-26/055) dated 16 December 2025 which we have handled under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act (FOISA).

You requested:

Our response:

We have provided this information in Table 1 below which shows the number of provisionally registered teachers on the Teacher Induction Scheme as data extracted on 31 August 2025. We have provided this this data is per employer and registration category of Primary and Secondary as requested.

For context, please note that all provisionally registered teachers have 3 years from the date of provisional registration to achieve full registration, but individuals on the Teacher Induction Scheme will usually achieve this by undertaking a placement over the course of 1 school session. As those following the flexible route do not complete a ‘probationary year’ we have excluded them from Table 1.

Table 1: Provisionally registered teachers on the Teacher Induction Scheme as data extracted on 31 August 2025 based on employer and registration category

We note that you also asked for the details of Local Authority managers. As this information is otherwise available on the GTC Scotland website we have applied section 25(1) of FOISA to this query.
