Response
I refer to your request for information (FOI 25-26/011) dated 23 May 2025 for records related to the Register of Teachers which we have handled under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act (FOISA).
You asked how many individuals “have lapsed, been cancelled or withdrawn” their “GTC Scotland registration” in “the last five years.” You also asked how many of these “relate to female teachers” and how many “occurred during a period of absence from work, e.g. maternity leave?”
Please note that we do not hold records relating to whether a removal occurred during a period of absence and have applied section 17(1)(b) of FOISA to the third query within your request.
We have, however, provided a response to the first and second query in Table 1 below as data extracted on 02 June 2025. This information is based on the GTC Scotland Registration Year which runs from 01 April to 31 March of each year. Please note that registrants self-declare their sex with GTC Scotland and the Table below is based on the information they have provided.

By way of advice and assistance and advice you might be interested in the Registration Snapshot Report on our website. Section 5 includes a breakdown of the Register of Teachers according to sex. Section 9 considers the number of individuals who have left the Register of Teachers and includes responses to a survey of individuals leaving the Register.
You may contact informationgovernance@gtcs.org.uk if you are dissatisfied with this response, to request GTC Scotland conduct a review of it. You should describe the original request and explain your grounds of review. You have 40 working days from receipt of this decision to submit a review request. Should you remain dissatisfied following a review by GTC Scotland, you have a right to apply for a decision to the Scottish Information Commissioner under FOISA. Information about how to make an application to the Scottish Information Commissioner can be found on the Commissioner’s website.
