For each of the last five academic years, I would like to request how many teachers have become unregistered in each year, broken down by age group.

Response

I refer to your request for information (FOI 25-26/004) dated 02 April 2025 for records related to the Register of Teachers which we have handled under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act (FOISA).

You asked, for “each of the last five academic years”, how many “teachers have become unregistered in each year, broken down by age group” in your original request. On 30 April, we asked if you would accept this information per the GTC Scotland Registration Year, which runs from 01 April to 31 March of each year, and you confirmed this would be acceptable. Thank you for providing us with this clarification.

We have provided the requested information in Table 1 below as data extracted on 30 April 2025.

Table 1: The age groupings of individuals who were removed or lapsed from the Register of Teachers between 01 April 2019 and 31 March 2025 and have not returned.

By way of advice and assistance and advice you might be interested in the Registration Snapshot Report available on our website. Section 9 considers the number of individuals who have left the Register of Teachers and includes responses to a survey of individuals leaving the Register.

You may contact informationgovernance@gtcs.org.uk if you are dissatisfied with this response to request GTC Scotland conduct a review of it. You should describe the original request and explain your grounds of review. You have 40 working days from receipt of this decision to submit a review request. Should you remain dissatisfied following a review, you have a right to apply for a decision to the Scottish Information Commissioner, information about how to make an application can be found on the Commissioner’s website.
