Pre-application FAQs for college lecturers qualified outside Scotland

General

Can you confirm if I am eligible for registration before I submit my application?

No, we are unable to confirm whether you are eligible for registration until you submit a formal application for registration with all the required documentation.

This is because each case is different and a number of factors are taken into consideration.

I do not possess any formal teacher education qualifications. Can I still apply for registration?

No, our Registration and Standards Rules do not permit registration of applicants who do not hold an appropriate teaching qualification.

I am going to complete my teacher education qualification in the near future. Can I apply for registration now?

No. You will have to complete your teacher education qualification and 190 days’ teaching experience in a college setting before you can apply for registration.

I hold a QTLS Certificate. Does this automatically allow me to teach in Scottish schools?

Holding QTLS will not make you eligible to teach in Scottish schools.

Assessment process/decision outcomes

How long does the registration process take?

We cannot guarantee a timeframe as all applications are assessed on an individual basis.

Delays are often experienced because referees do not submit a report. We advise you to contact your nominated referee(s) to ensure they are willing to support your application. The reference form will be sent to your nominated referee(s) via email, therefore, it is crucial that you provide their correct work email address.

What are the possible outcomes of the assessment of my application?

There are two possible outcomes of the assessment of your application.

1. Full Registration
  • you meet the teacher education requirements for registration in Further Education and
  • we have received satisfactory referee reports on 190 days’ continuous full-time teaching service in a college setting.
2. Refusal of Registration

If your application for registration is refused this means that you have not met the teacher education requirements and / or we have not been able to confirm that you have completed 190 days’ teaching experience in a college setting.

How will I be notified of the outcome of my application?

Once we have completed our assessment of your case, you will receive a decision by email.

What if I don’t agree with the outcome of my application? Can I contest GTC Scotland’s decision?

If GTC Scotland has awarded you registration but not to the extent you wished (e.g. you have not been awarded full registration or you have not been awarded registration in all of the categories that you believe you are eligible to be registered in) you have the right to ask for that decision to be reviewed by a Registration Panel. You must do this within 28 days of the date that you receive your decision letter from the Registration department.

Employment (salary, contracts and finding a job)

If my application is successful, what will my salary be?

GTC Scotland has no remit over pay scales and terms and conditions.

Any decision on salary will be made by your employer.

You should discuss options directly with your employer.

Can I apply for teaching posts before I am registered with GTC Scotland?

You should contact employers directly to check whether they would be willing to accept an application from you before you are registered with GTC Scotland.

Documents required for application

The documentation you require is not in English. Do I need to translate it into English?

Yes. You must submit scanned copies of this documentation in the original language and certified English translations. This does not apply to your passport.

I am still waiting for some documentation (e.g. degree/teacher education qualification transcript, overseas criminal checks etc.). Can I apply now and send the outstanding documentation once I have received it?

You will not be able to complete your online submission unless the mandatory documentation is uploaded at time of applying.

Will failure to send in all the required documentation result in my application being delayed?

Yes. Your case assessor will contact you if any other documentation is required to reach a decision.

It is important that you provide any additional documentation within the timescale given by your assessor.
