Rules and Policies

Fitness to Teach proceedings are governed by rules and legislation.

If you are appearing at a hearing, it is important that you or your representative is familiar with the Fitness to Teach Rules.

We will highlight these to anyone who is subject to our Fitness to Teach process.

Fitness to Teach Rules

These Rules came into force on 21 August 2017 and apply to any referral, application or recommendation.

Fitness to Teach Threshold Policy

Our Fitness to Teach Threshold Policy sets out what we will investigate under our Fitness to Teach procedures.

This is important information for anyone wishing to make a referral to GTC Scotland about a teacher’s conduct or professional competence.

Fitness to Teach Publication Policy

This policy sets out how we communicate information about our Fitness to Teach cases.

Legal Assessor Rules

This publication sets out the role and functions of any Legal Assessor in attendance at Fitness to Teach Panel or Appeals Board hearings.

Practice Statements

We have a number of practice statements to help guide and inform best practice at hearings.

They seek to ensure that we adopt efficient, effective, rational and consistent practice. They also promote our commitment to principles of transparency and fairness and best regulatory practice.
