Teaching Conceptually in Numeracy Programme

This course is designed for practitioners or schools who have expressed an interest in developing their numeracy pedagogies and would like to establish collaborative approaches to support learning in the classroom. The outcome of the sessions is for the practitioner to become more confident and skilled in their teaching of numeracy, with the intention of leading to improvement of attainment. Participants will increase their knowledge of conceptual understanding in numeracy (CUiN), focusing on the ‘why’ as well as the ‘how’. 

Programme specifications

• Explore and analyse the distinction between conceptual understanding andprocedural knowledge. 
• Increase understanding of the principles of conceptual understanding in number 
• Increase ability to use effective diagnostic assessment and responsive planning. 
• Explore active and experiential learning to support learners to improvein conceptual understanding in number.  
• Have an interest in the development of numeracy pedagogy and conceptual understanding in numeracy within your setting. 
• Be challenged to think about your practice and reflect upon the learning you have undertaken.

• Session 1: Introduction to the course and counting.
• Session 2: Number Sense
• Session 3: Place Value
• Session 4: Addition and Subtraction
• Session 5: Multiplication and Division
• Session 6: Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
• Session 7: Calculations
• Session 8: Planning for Implementation  

Programme criteria 

To successfully complete this course participants must demonstrate:

• Attendance at least 6 of the sessions with understanding of the key theories and pedagogies underpinning the sessions. 
• Engagement with the literature from the bibliography between sessions. 
• Evidence of a spiral on enquiry after reflecting on practice. 
• Professional dialogue with other participants and team leaders.
