Theme 3: Supporting structures for teacher development

As professionals, teachers need to be in the driving seat of their development. A positive introduction to this at early career stage will encourage career-long engagement. We need to put better structures in place to give teachers the time to learn and reflect. The complexities of teaching mean teachers need time to explore current issues in collaboration with colleagues, identify what they mean for their teaching, implement new approaches and evaluate their impact. Engagement with teaching standards is fundamental to this process.

Effective professional review and development (PRD) for individual teachers must be prioritised and enhanced. PRD is an essential part of Professional Update, which is the reaccreditation process that teachers must complete to maintain their GTC Scotland registration. High-quality PRD, together with Professional Update, help to improve the quality of teaching and learning.

3.1 We call for putting better structures in place to give teachers the time to reflect, learn and evaluate.

3.2 We call for a more supportive environment for teachers to engage meaningfully and proactively with Professional Review and Development and reaccreditation.
