Theme 2: A refreshed teacher education and development framework 

Education, learning and development throughout a teacher’s career needs to be designed and resourced appropriately to support the enhancement of professional expertise. It is an oversight to focus national policy or legislative solutions on one component part of the teacher education and development journey without considering the part others can play

A refreshed framework must ensure that new teachers are given a supported induction into the profession, and that experienced teachers are given the support they need to effectively mentor new teachers.

Teachers must also have access to ongoing high quality national learning that is relevant to their context and recognises changing societal needs. Topics that require national alignment to support teacher knowledge and skills include additional support needs, digital learning and the ethical use and implications of artificial intelligence.

2.1 We call for a refreshed Teacher Education and Development framework that supports teachers at all stages of their career and offers professional development that reflects the particular level of expertise of the individual teacher.

2.2 We call for a long-term strategic focus on improved professional learning and development for teachers that is relevant, on demand and of a high quality
