Theme 1: Understanding and valuing teaching
Teaching is a graduate profession in Scotland. We can be confident that the people who are teaching secondary subjects have reached the required level of proficiency in those subjects themselves; and that teachers of our younger children have the required depth of expertise in the correct pedagogical theory and practice to support their development.Teaching is also a complex profession: intellectually, ethically and relationally. Registration provides a safeguard for quality education, and it is a legal requirement for teachers to teach according to their registration category.
It is essential that this understanding of what it means to be a teacher in Scotland underpins national education strategy and policy
1.1 We call for better understanding and appreciation of teaching, including providing a definition of ‘registered teacher’ in the relevant legislation to better protect what it means to have and use this title. This is central to ensuring the profession is trusted, respected and attractive to join.
1.2 We call for greater support to allow teachers to expand their registration categories. Teachers need access to high-quality ongoing education opportunities to expand their registration status. This will provide the flexibility the education system needs to address teacher supply while continuing to uphold high standards.
