Introduction

The General Teaching Council for Scotland is the independent regulator for teachers in Scotland. We work in the public interest to enhance trust in teachers by setting, upholding and promoting high standards.

Throughout Scotland’s current education reform process, we have been advocating for trusted teaching as a critical part of the future vision for Scottish education. 2025 marks 60 years of teaching being a profession in Scotland. Over 6 decades a strong framework for trusted teaching has been built but some core challenges remain. We believe that the response to these challenges must ensure that high teaching standards are championed and supported.

Trusted teaching needs to be a central feature of the work of any future Scottish Government, and here we set out 5 key themes critical to that work.
