Future focus
Our immediate focus will be on continuing to recover and reduce our caseload. This will include continuing to work with partners to improve cooperation in our process and information flow. We need to educate our partners more on the role of our Fitness to Teach process and how it fits with the roles of others. Our goal also remains to build more early engagement in the Fitness to Teach process in line with the ethos and purpose of professional regulation.
We will also be working to improve our use of digital technology to support Fitness to Teach casework and enable us to make better use of the data we hold. We currently rely significantly on manual processes across all our Fitness to Teach work which is unsustainable.
We have also experienced a significant increase over the last five years in the number of information requests we receive under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 about our Fitness to Teach work. The way that we hold data on our casework has made these requests difficult and time consuming to respond to, particularly taking into account the short time period we have in which to respond, by law.
We want to make significant improvements so that we can continue to grow our use of data to educate and inform the profession and the public about our Fitness to Teach work. We plan to publish further reports like this in future and will be focusing on case and referrer profile next. Reports on the profile of the teachers referred into the Fitness to Teach process, as well as a deeper look at professional competence cases, will follow after that.
We will be working to improve the resilience of our resource to support Fitness to Teach casework. We operate within a contained financial budget and our staff numbers are likely to remain small so we will need to be innovative in our approach.
A review of our Fitness to Teach Rules – the Rules that set out the legal process followed in our Fitness to Teach work – will also take place in the coming years. We want to ensure that the Rules are up to date and fit for the future.
