GTCS Webinar: Using maths textbooks in primary

GTCS Webinar SeriesJoin us for a webinar with the series editor of Primary Maths for Scotland, Craig Lowther, who will share how he uses textbooks to promote mathematical learning in primary schools.

In this webinar the series editor of Primary Maths for Scotland, Craig Lowther, will share how he uses textbooks to promote mathematical learning in primary schools.

For over 25 years Craig has used and developed resources for the Primary, Secondary and University sectors.  He has always approached using textbooks just like any other resource in mathematics; it is a flexible tool that can to be adapted to the needs of the pupils using them.  The key factors for Craig when using a resource is to ensure that:

  • it is pitched at the right level
  • it uses mathematical language consistently
  • it has easy access to the learning that can build to stretch the most able
  • it enables active learning
  • it provides feedback about what the pupils know
  • it covers the expected standards comprehensively
  • it promotes enjoyment of learning.

Primary Maths for Scotland has been written by a team of experienced Primary teachers and local authority advisors. They are designed to be flexible and ensure that the pupils are supported to progressively build on prior learning and stretched to learn and consolidate new skills and knowledge. Each unit contains a diagnostic question, examples with explanations, exercise questions, to practise new learning, and a challenge question. Craig will explain how he uses each section to promote learning and will provide suggestions for how teachers can use the books (or any mathematics resource!) with their own pupils.
