Renewal of annual registration

We would like to remind all registered teachers that they are required to pay an annual registration fee to remain on the Register and be eligible to teach in a Scottish state school.

For teachers, the annual registration fee is £45 and is due in April each year.

The registration fee will be deducted from your salary and then paid directly to us by your Local Authority/Employer. It is really important that teachers check their pay statements for both March and April to ensure that the fee has been deducted.

Annual fee not paid by local authority/employer

If you are not in employment, we will write to you in May, this letter will provide you with payment options.

If you do receive a letter asking you to pay your registration fee, it means we have not received payment from an employer or any other source. If you think this is incorrect please contact the Teacher Registration Department.

Annual fee deducted by two or more local authorities

We run reports to identify any teachers who have had their fee deducted more than once. Refunds are processed during the month of May and posted out during May and June. This is a lengthy process and can depend on when we receive accurate information from the local authorities. We will of course deal with these issues as quickly as possible.

Re-registration/Initial Registration fee, PVG Scheme fee and Annual Registration fee

Your questions answered

Q: My fee has been paid by two different local authorities. When will I get my refund?
A: Once we've finalised the details with each local authority we'll issue a refund cheque as quickly as possible, usually during May and June each year.

Q: Can my refund be paid directly into my bank account?
A: If paid via Local Authority/ Internet banking, a refund cheque will be provided. If paid by Debit/ Credit Card, the monies will be refunded back into your account.

Q: I'm over 65, do I still need to pay my registration fee?
A: Yes, all teachers over the age of 65 must pay the registration fee if they wish to teach in a classroom.

Q: Can I suspend my registration for a period of time?
A: You cannot suspend your registration. You can either maintain your registration status by continuing to pay the annual registration fee, or re-join at a later date.
