Letter of Professional Standing

If you are planning on teaching abroad it is likely that the authorities in that country will require proof of your registration in Scotland. If your Certificate of Registration is not an accepted way of proving your registration, the generally accepted way is the Letter of Professional Standing (LOPS).

The Letter of Professional Standing states that you are registered with us, or are eligible for registration in terms of the Teaching Council (Scotland) Act 1965, Section 6(2). The letter confirms that you are either qualified in Primary/ Secondary as a Primary/ Secondary Education teacher and if secondary what subject. This further states that registration was not suspended, revoked or cancelled for any reason.

You should note that in the vast majority of cases, other countries may also require you to be registered with GTC Scotland. We would urge you to check with the specific country in order to establish exactly what the requirements are.

EU Directive
In respect to letters issued under the terms of EU Directive 2005/36, the LOPS will confirm that you are qualified in Primary/ Secondary as a Primary/ Secondary Education teacher and if secondary what subject. This further states that registration was not suspended, revoked or cancelled for any reason.

Please note that there is an administration fee of £30 which must be paid to GTC Scotland before the Letter of Professional Standing can be issued.
