Eligibility Independent School - Teachers Qualified Outside Scotland - UK/Rest of World (Not EU/EEA or Switzerland)

This information is for teachers qualified elsewhere in the UK (i.e. England, Wales or Northern Ireland) or outside of the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) who commenced employment at their current Independent School before 1 October 2017.

If you qualified in another EU/EEA Member State or in Switzerland you should go to:

Eligibility – teachers who are fully qualified in an EU/EEA Member State (not UK) or in Switzerland

FOR PRIMARY AND SECONDARY TEACHERS

TEACHING QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

An applicant must have either:

  • Completed teacher education equivalent to one academic year of full-time study with any part-time study normally being extended over a period of not more than three years) or
  • If academic and teacher education has been undertaken concurrently (eg, a Bachelor of Education), have completed a course of not less than three years in duration (with any part-time study normally being extended over a period of not more than seven years)

This qualification should extend to SCQF Level 9 or above and should be comparable in terms of organisation and content to the Scottish initial teaching qualification, which means it should:

  • relate to either the primary or secondary age range;
  • include professional/pedagogic studies
  • include appropriate subject studies (for Primary Education these need to reflect the full range of the Scottish primary school curriculum)
  • include school-based teaching experience

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

An applicant must hold:

  • A United Kingdom degree or an academic qualification which is equivalent to a United Kingdom degree. An academic qualification will be regarded as equivalent to a United Kingdom degree if it either:
    1. Is recognised as such by the UK National Academic Recognition Information Centre (UK NARIC); or
    2. Has borne the equivalent of 120 credit points at Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework (SCQF) level 7 (or above), 120 credit points at SCQF level 8 (or above) and 120 credit points a SCQF level 9 (or above)

For registration in Secondary Education, an applicant must have a minimum of 80 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 7 (or above) relating to the subject in which their teacher education is held, 40 of which must be at SCQF level 8 (or above). Important - applicants who have a degree and a teaching qualification which do not fully meet all of the relevant teaching qualification and/or academic requirements may still be considered for Provisional (Conditional) registration. This type of registration allows the applicant to register and continue to teach whilst they complete additional study to make good the shortfall(s) in their qualifications. There is no time limit for completion of this study at present, although GTCS reserves the right to introduce one in the future if it deems this to be necessary. Applicants who do not have a degree and/or teaching qualification can apply for Provisional (Conditional) Named School Only registration.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES TEACHERS

Teachers of Modern Foreign Languages in Scotland are required to meet a foreign residency requirement. Information about the foreign residency requirement can be found here.

Important - applicants who do not meet the residency requirement may still be able to be considered for Provisional (Conditional) registration. This type of registration allows the applicant to register and continue to teach whilst they complete the required period of residence. There is no time limit for completion of this requirement at present although GTCS reserves the right to introduce one in the future if it deems this to be necessary.

ASN (ADDITIONAL SUPPORT NEEDS) REGISTRATION

Applicants who are employed as Additional Support Needs teachers may be considered for registration in ASN. Full registration may be considered where the applicant has completed an appropriate ASN award. This award needs to:

  • be equivalent to a minimum of 60 Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) credit points
  • be at SCQF level 9 or above
  • have included courses/ modules with a sufficiently broad and general content to cover pupils with a range of additional support needs.

Where an applicant does not hold an appropriate ASN award, they may be considered for Provisional (Conditional) registration. This will allow them to register and continue to teach whilst completing an appropriate ASN award. There is no time limit for this at present although GTCS reserves the right to introduce one in the future if it deems this to be necessary.
