Changes to registration rules for Qualified Outside Scotland and Professional Registration applicants as of 1 January 2016

As of 1 January 2016 there will be some changes to the registration rules for Qualified Outside Scotland and Professional Registration applicants. These are as follows:

Qualified Outside Scotland

  • Flexible approach to shortfalls in academic study and/or teacher education requirements for registration (including foreign residence requirement for registration in a Modern Foreign Language). Applicants who do not fully meet the requirements for Full or Provisional registration may be able to be considered by GTCS for Provisional (Conditional) Registration. Information about this new type of registration can be found on the Provisional (Conditional) Registration information page:

Professional Registration

  • End of one year teaching service requirement. Applicants will no longer need one year of teaching service after the award of Full Registration in order to apply for Professional Registration.
  • Flexible approach to shortfalls in academic study requirement for Professional Registration (including foreign residence requirement for registration in a Modern Foreign Language). Applicants who do not fully meet the academic study requirement for registration in the additional subject area may be able to be considered for Provisional (Conditional) Registration. This type of registration involves the applicant completing a specified condition within a set time limit (no more than 3 years). In the case of an academic study shortfall this condition will be a specified amount of additional academic study of the new subject area, to make good the academic shortfall. In the case of a shortfall in the foreign residence requirement this condition will be to meet the residence requirement.
