Qualified outside Scotland FAQs

Qualified outside Scotland

Important: We are currently dealing with a high number of applications for registration from teachers qualified outside Scotland. Although we are processing and assessing these as quickly as possible, please be aware that it will take several weeks for a decision to be made on your application. We would advise that you bear this in mind when planning when to submit your application to GTC Scotland. You can help to reduce delays by carefully reading all of the information that we provide in this section and ensuring that you submit all of the required documentation with your application.

It is a legal requirement for any teacher teaching in a Scottish state school to be registered with GTC Scotland. Being registered not only allows an individual to teach, it also provides assurances to employers, parents and children that teachers meet a national standard of teaching.

We have produced a range of useful and important information for teachers who have qualified outside of Scotland and would like to teach in Scotland. This covers the requirements for registration as well as how to submit your application.

Each application for registration from teachers qualified outside of Scotland is individually assessed against our Registration and Standard Rules.

A number of changes were made to our registration rules for teachers qualified in the UK and Rest of the World (not EU/ EEA) as of 1 January 2016.

Depending on where you obtained your teaching qualification you should choose one of the options below in order to access the information which is relevant to you:
