Application for registration documentation - Primary and Secondary
Failure to send in all the required documentation will result in your application being delayed. It may also lead to your application being closed and destroyed. If this happens you will be required to re-apply and you will be treated as a new applicant who will be required to complete another application form, provide supporting documentation and pay the non-refundable processing fee.
A new application form was introduced on 2 April 2012 which can be viewed on our Apply for registration page. Please note that, from 1 May 2012 onwards, applications will only be accepted if they are made on this application form. Applications made on any other application form which are received after 1 May 2012 will not be processed and will instead be returned to the applicant.
Teachers who have qualified outside of Scotland are required to provide the following when they submit their application form for registration:
1. Non-refundable processing fee of £60.
2. Degree certificate (stating full degree title, including subject, and the award date). If your degree is also your teaching qualification (e.g. B Ed) you will not need to submit additional documentation for item 5, see below.
3. Transcript of degree. This is a year-by-year academic breakdown of the subjects studied during your degree. If your degree is also your teaching qualification (e.g. B Ed) you will not need to submit additional documentation for item 6, see below
4. Evidence of any other relevant qualifications declared on the application.
5. Teaching qualification certificate (stating full title of qualification and the award date). If you are a newly qualified teacher and haven't been issued with a certificate yet please see the advice below. Please do not submit an application if you have not been awarded your teaching qualification yet, as this will have to be returned to you.
6. Transcript of teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE).
7. Official documentation confirming age range in years (e.g. 5 to 11 years of age) and subject(s) covered by professional studies. This must be issued by the university/college where you completed your teaching qualification.
If you are applying for registration in a Modern Foreign Language, we will only register you in the specific language (e.g. French, German, Spanish) to which your initial teacher education relates. We will not accept official documentation which only states Modern Foreign Languages.
8. EU/EEA applicants only (non UK) - Official letter from Ministry of Education in home EU Member State confirming that you are recognised as a fully qualified teacher in that country and the age range ( in years) and subject(s) which this recognition entitles you to teach. NB if teaching is not a regulated profession in your EU Member State (e.g. France) you should contact us for advice before submitting any application for registration.
9. Official certified translations of all documents (if applicable). If your documentation is in a language other than English, you must supply photocopies of this documentation in the original language and certified English translations (prepared and certified by an accredited translator). This does not apply to your passport. In the case of EU qualified teachers, a translation of your birth certificate will also not normally be required. However, we reserve the right to request that you provide your own translation of your birth certificate if we feel that this is appropriate in your own particular case.
The Association of Translation Companies can provide information about translation companies.
10. Nomination of a referee who can comment on your most recent teaching service. Please note that we are only able to consider teaching service from the last 5 years. If you have not taught during the last 5 years you should nominate a character referee instead.
For further information on the type of reference we can consider, please refer to the Application for registration references
11. Overseas criminal record checks. If you were born overseas and lived there until adulthood or have spent more than 3 months outside the UK in the last 10 years you should obtain an overseas criminal record check confirming that you do not have a criminal record in said country. We will require a national check for the specific country e.g. FBI or RCMP checks. If this applies to you, you must obtain this document before you submit your application. Some countries can take several months to issue a certificate.
12. Documentation in support of a name change.
13. Birth certificate.
14. Personal details page of passport.
Newly Qualified Teachers: if you have recently been awarded a teaching qualification but have not yet been issued with your teaching qualification certificate you should provide an official statement from your teacher education institution (e.g. University faculty of education) instead, giving the following information:
- the date on which you passed the qualification
- that you are not subject to any appeals process
- that there are no known impediments to you being issued with your teaching qualification certificate at graduation
