Alternative Route

Is anyone out there completing their probation through the Alternative Route?? I startled last August and did manage to get a temporary part time contract for the whole of last year which takes me up to about 90 days. Just wondering if anyone else is doing it/has done it and how you've managed!

Difficulty finding work

I am taking the alternative route having qualified this summer in Scotland.I am finding it verydifficult to get work and starting to worry. What are the experiences of others? How long did it take?

Supply in a special school - how much counts towards registration?

Hi,

I qualified in England last year after doing a Primary PGCE. I've moved back to Scotland to follow the Alternative route to registration, and have signed up to my local council's supply list. I have completed a week in a mainstream primary school, and start a fulll time maternity post in a special school tomorrow. I'm realy happy to have this opportunity - apart from the fact that I was lucky to get a longer term post, I have always been interested in teaching in this sector and look forward to learning a lot during my time at the school. My concern, however, is how this will affect my probation and registration with the GTCS as aprimary teacher. Will a percentage of my teaching time at a special school count? I have also heard that you can register through service in a special school, but as an SEN teacher only. Is that true?? I have spoken to people at the GTCS on the phone, but remain a bit confused about my options! If anyone has any advice or experience they could share, I would really appreicate it. Thanks in advance!

Temporary versus Fixed Term Posts

Hi there,

I am an alternative route probationer who's just worked 88 days off my probation in a primary school. The position stopped naturally at session end.

Now I'm on the lookout for a new and hopefully chunky post and am applying left, right and centre within 2 councils in Scotland. However, I have bumped in to an odd situation, unless I am misunderstanding the term 'fixed term'.

My previous job was advertised as a temporary job (5 months maternity cover) within council 'A'. I'm now applying for what I believe is the same thing in council 'B', but they call the posts fixed term and they tell me, that they treat their fixed term posts as permanent posts and do not let provisional registered probationers apply for them; i.e. in council B I can only get work via their supply pool.

In council A, they seem not to have an issue employing provisional registered probationers on temporary (fixed term) posts. I am therefore very limited to get work in council B and also councils seem to treat provisional probationers differently.

Has anyone else come across this situation, or can someone explain why these seemingly same kinds of posts are treated differently?

I was wondering how "easy" you found getting a temporary job via the aternative route. Any advice would be much appreciated. I need to do 135 days to gain full registration. My subject is mathematics.

The Alternative Route

I have just started supply teaching in Scotland after qualifying in England last year and am following the alternative route through supply teaching to complete my probation year. I was wondering if anyone else who has been through or is going through this route would be able to give me any advice or information, as the only help I can find is through guidance notes on the GTCS website. I would really appreciate anyone who has experience of the alternative route to let me know how you found it, especially with regards to the level of support you received.
