    Spelling Resources

    Anyone out there with some good spelling resources (games, books or computer based) that are suitable for P3 stage? I`d be interested in hearing about them.

    Re: Spelling Resources

    Can’t say how good they are, but there are some decent reviews online for spelling software by a company called Sherston:

    1) Spell It! Spelling with the Spellits

    2) Spelling Show

    3) Spellmate

    The BBC schools website http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/websites/4_11/site/literacy.shtml has a range of literacy games, though not all specifically about spelling.

    Or try the link http://www.literacytrust.org.uk/Database/resources2.html#spelling to the National Literacy Trust website, which lists books and other resources (OK, often aimed at the English National Curriculum but probably usable in Scotland), many of which have been recommended by primary teachers. Mind you, when I tried the web links, some of them did not work. However, the link to http://www.northwood.org.uk/literacy.htm did work. This is a primary school site with some sorting and word search games aimed at P3.

    Hope this is helpful

    Re: Spelling Resources

    I do 'battleship' spelling with my P3's once we have learned the spelling rule for the particular week.

    Basically each child gets a laminated card which has 2 grids of co-ordinate boxes on it. Their partner has the exact same.

    They write in a spelling word (left to right!!) and then ask their partner co-ordinates to guess where the word is. Then able to mark it in their own copy of the partners grid.

    My kids love it.

    I've used that right up the school too. Very effective. For the wee ones, you can adapt it so its naughts and crosses, so the children are having to spell the word and think strategically to try and win!!

     A great website I have use frequently is www.spellingcity.com

    You can input the children's spelling words and they can then play spelling games using their word list.

    I have used the spelling resources as layout out in the Highland Literacy project. I have seen some/most of these elsewhere and work well! Try;
