Skoolkid's probation blog

I am a grumpy old man who has swapped the security of a 25 year career in IT for an uncertain future in Teaching. For my probationary year I shall be joined on my journey by 29 Primary Three pupils. This is my story...
Well that week fairly flew in!

Jings these weeks go quick.
Plenty of ups and downs, but that's no surprise so I'm not depressed.

Downs - I hate writing about behaviour management because we all just end up going over the same old twaddle. Anyway........behaviour management  :  mine is hopeless. Fortunately my 0.3 is from heaven and she has convinced me there is hope.

Ups: One wee boy giving me grief every day (he's only 7) and going home with 'amber lights' every day (green is good, amber is not), asks me during our 2 minute brain break "Can I keep doing my Maths?" Well, I nearly passed my crisps round. He continued, asked a couple of pertinent questions, finished the whole exercise and got them all right. So I wrote a nice wee note to his parents in his homework diary. God that felt good! To complete the week he got another 'amber' Embarrassed

Another Up (ish). Gave one of the nicest, hardest working girls in the class an 'amber'. Her first ever at school. Tears all through the afternoon. I felt bad but I was being 'tough' all round and I had to be fair. During Golden Time she went off to the painting area, teardrops dripping into her primary colours. Ten minutes later she came back with a lovely sunny painting and said it was for me. Wow, how does that work?

Now looking forward to teaching addition (with carrying no less), my water filtration experiment (once I discover what that means!) and St. Mirren v. Hibs on Sky this weekend.

I'm off for a sherry.
