Council members

The 37 members of Council have a significant role to play in shaping the teaching profession of Scotland, maintaining and improving professional standards, and contributing to the development of teacher professionalism and Scottish education.

Council membership follows a rolling programme with election, nomination and appointments processes taking place every two years and half of the members stepping down at the end of each two year period. This is based on a four year term of office for Council members.

(For the first fully independent Council only - which took up office on 2 April 2012 - half of the Council members are serving for a period of two years and the other half for four years. This is to introduce the above rolling programme of elections, nominations and appointments to the Council.)
