Appointments Committee members
The Appointments Committee is an independent committee responsible for overseeing the appointment of individuals to serve on GTC Scotland Adjudicating Panels and the independent Appeals Board and the appointment of the 7 Lay members of Council. This involves:
- arranging for vacancies to be advertised
- sifting applications
- interviewing candidates
- arranging for successful candidates to be notified
- reporting to Council on the appointments made
The Appointments Committee is made up of 11 members and includes lay people as well as registered teachers. The work of the Appointments Committee is based in Scotland and principally at GTC Scotland's Edinburgh office.

Duties and Role of an Appointments Committee Member
The role of a GTC Scotland Appointments Committee member is, as part of the Appointments Committee, to select and recruit appointed lay members of Council and appointed members of GTC Scotland's panels or committees. A GTC Scotland Appointments Committee member will:
- have knowledge of, and adhere to, the legal and procedural framework which govern the functions of the Appointments Committee
- agree the role and job specification for vacant posts
- agree and oversee the recruitment process, including application sifting and interviews
- oversee the appointments process, including issuing of letters of appointment
- confirm the appointment of individuals, including reviewing references
- report appropriately on the appointments made
- work in trust and confidence with other Appointment Committee members and GTC Scotland staff
Term of Appointment
Appointment is for a 4 year term. A further 4 year term may be served if successfully re-appointed.
