About the programme

Woodland and Coastal Activity Leader Training (WALT and CALT) are accredited training courses that provide educators with the skills, knowledge and confidence to lead exciting outdoor learning sessions for students of all ages and abilities in both woodland and coastal settings. Designed as a Scottish alternative to Forest School training, WALT and CALT provides educators and early-years practitioners with an enjoyable and practical route to integrating regular outdoor, experiential learning into the school routine. Whilst outdoor education features prominently in the Curriculum for Excellence, few teachers are trained to deliver outdoor education and struggle to adapt their lesson content and classroom management to outdoor settings. WALT and CALT were designed to equip educators with everything they need to bring their learning to life in the great outdoors.

Course content

Course content includes:

  • Outdoor group management and methodology
  • Managing safety and risk
  • A wealth of naturalist knowledge including trees & plants, animal tracks and signs, invertebrates and much more
  • Bushcraft skills including shelter building, use of sharp tools, foraging, fire lighting, campfire cooking as well as knots and tarps
  • Adapting traditional lesson content to outdoor contexts (e.g. math, science, English etc)
  • The development of your first risk-assessed session plans so you can immediately start practicing outdoor sessions

Wild things! will also introduce learners to a plethora of different resources and methodologies that will help students create imaginative, inspired and educational outdoor learning sessions.

Both courses can be completed either wholly in person, or via online and practical components. Both courses have received Professional Recognition from The General Teaching for Scotland as well as being officially Endorsed by Education Scotland, making the courses highly relevant to educators in Scotland. If you would like to discuss either of the courses in person, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
