The General Teaching Council for Scotland

Enhancing professionalism in education since 1965

Who We Are

The 37 members of Council have a significant role to play in shaping the teaching profession of Scotland, maintaining and improving professional standards, and contributing to the development of teacher professionalism and Scottish education.

GTCS employs a mix of professionals from the fields of education; finance; law; IT; administration; and communications amongst others.

We have an experienced and dedicated Corporate Management Team who are responsible for our strategic direction, running and effective and cost efficient organisation, and for the development, promotion and implementation of the Council's educational policy.

The GTC Scotland is made up of registered teachers and lay members who are independent of the GTC Scotland Council.

Since its foundation in 1965, GTCS has protected the professionalism of teaching in Scotland. Read about the history of GTCS
