The 37 members of the GTCS Council have a significant role to play in shaping the teaching profession of Scotland, maintaining and improving professional standards, and contributing to the development of teacher professionalism and Scottish education.

Members of Council are governed by the GTCS Code of Conduct and Membership Scheme and must at all times observe the highest standards of impartiality, integrity and objectivity in relation to the advice they provide. Find out more about their role.
Committees, sub-committees and panels meet as and when necessary for the transaction of their business which covers multiple functions and delegated responsibilities.
An Appointments Committee has been established which is made up of GTCS registered teachers and lay members that are independent of GTCS.
Council Elections take place every two years as part of the rolling programme where half of the members step down after completing their four year term.
Meetings and minutes
Council meetings take place four times a year, although special meetings may take place when required. These meetings are open to the public.
