When changing local authority you may be asked for proof of registration, this can be done in two ways:

  • by supplying a copy of your March/April payslip showing the annual GTC Scotland registration fee deduction
  • ask the local authority to Search the Register of teachers
Teaching Abroad/Letter of Professional Standing

If you are planning on teaching abroad it is likely that the authorities in that country will require proof of your registration in Scotland. The generally accepted way of proving your registration is a Letter of Professional Standing.

The Letter of Professional Standing states that you are registered with us or are eligible for registration in terms of the Teaching Council (Scotland) Act 1965, Section 6(2). This further states that your qualification satisfies the requirements of The European Communities (Recognition of Professional Qualifications) Regulations 2007, made by the Government of the United Kingdom to Implement Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Community.

You should note that in the vast majority of cases, other countries will also require you to be registered with the GTCS. We would urge you to check with the specific country in order to establish exactly what the requirements are.

Please note that there is an administration fee of £25 which must be paid to GTC Scotland before the Letter of Professional Standing can be issued.

Payment can be made by cheque to GTC Scotland and requests should include the following information:

  • Your Teacher Registration Number
  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • The Scottish Higher Education Institution (HEI) where you completed your teacher education course
  • Date you completed your teacher education in Scotland
  • Subject or Sector qualified to teach
  • The country requesting the letter.

Alternatively payment can be made by credit/debit card. Full details can be sent using the Credit/Debit Card Details Form (MS Word)
