Proof of Registration

Changing Local Authority

When changing local authority you may be asked for proof of registration. This can be done in two ways:

  • Supplying a copy of your March/April payslip showing the annual GTC Scotland registration fee deduction.
  • Asking the local authority to Search the Register of teachers.

Teaching Abroad (Letter of Professional Standing)

If you are planning on teaching outside of Scotland it is likely that the authorities in that country will require proof of your registration in Scotland. The generally accepted way of proving your registration is a Letter of Professional Standing.

The Letter of Professional Standing states that you are registered with us, or are eligible for registration in terms of the Teaching Council (Scotland) Act 1965, Section 6(2) to be considered for registration.

If you are fully registered with the Council, the Letter of Professional Standing further states that your qualification satisfies the requirements of The European Communities (Recognition of Professional Qualifications) Regulations 2007, made by the Government of the United Kingdom to Implement Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Community.

You should note that in the vast majority of cases, other countries will also require you to be registered with the GTCS. We would urge you to check with the specific country in order to establish exactly what the requirements are.

An administration fee of £25 is required to be paid to GTC Scotland before a letter of professional standing can be issued.
