The Scottish education system differs to that of other countries. GTC Scotland operates independently from the other UK General Teaching Councils (England, Wales and Northern Ireland).
You should only register with GTC Scotland if you intend to teach in Scotland as registration with GTC Scotland is specific to the Scottish Education system.
Please note that there are certain teaching qualifications that we do not accept in Scotland:
This is not an exhaustive list. In general we look for PGCE or BEd qualifications. Please see our eligibility criteria for more information.
If you are officially recognised in another EU member state as a fully qualified teacher, you are likely to be eligible for some form of registration with GTC Scotland. You should obtain a letter from the Ministry of Education in the member state where you were trained, stating the age range in years and subject you are recognised to teach.
If you trained overseas (non EU) you must check that you meet the eligibility criteria to be able to teach in Scotland.
Please note:
Teaching in Scotland has been an all graduate profession since 1994 and requires candidates to have a degree.
If you qualified as a teacher prior to 1994, you should ask for further advice before submitting your application. Contact ear@gtcs.org.uk
