We welcome applications from teachers who have trained outside Scotland. All such applications will be assessed on an individual basis. This section will guide you through the registration process.
The process for registration will depend on where you qualified. We provide advice for teachers who:
Please note: the assessment policies are constantly reviewed and any advice given is valid at that time but may change as time passes.
Before submitting an application form you should check that you meet the eligibility criteria to teach in Scotland. Registration is available in three sectors: the Primary, Secondary or Further Education sector.
You must obtain and include with your application all the required documentation. Failure to do this will result in your application being delayed. It may also lead to your application being closed and destroyed. If this happens you will be required to re-apply and you will be treated as a new applicant who will be required to complete another application form, provide supporting documentation and pay the non-refundable assessment fee.
On receipt of your completed application form, we will assess your case purely on its own merits. This is referred to as the assessment process.
The outcome of assessment will either be an offer of registration or refusal of registration.
All eligible teachers applying for registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland may be given a probationary period of up to 270 days to complete. Satisfactory reference reports on previous teaching service may allow us to reduce/waive this probation period.
Teachers who do not have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent in England, Wales or Northern Ireland and who have not successfully completed an induction year in the UK, will always be required to complete a period of up to 60 days probationary service in a Scottish school.
