Teachers Qualified Outside Scotland

We welcome applications from teachers who have trained outside Scotland. All such applications will be assessed on an individual basis. This section will guide you through the registration process.

  1. Where did you qualify?

The process for registration will depend on where you qualified. We provide advice for teachers who:

    • Qualified in the UK
    • Qualified in the European Union (EU)
    • Qualified overseas (non EU)

  1. Are you eligible?

Before submitting an application form you should check that you meet the eligibility criteria to teach in either the Primary, Secondary or Further Education sector.

  1. How to Apply

To apply you must complete and submit the application form, along with the Required Documentation.

  1. The Assessment Process and Fee

On receipt of your completed application form, we will assess your case purely on its own merits. This is referred to as the assessment process.

  1. Outcome of Assessment

The outcome of assessment will either be an offer of registration or refusal of registration.

  1. Probationary Process

All eligible teachers applying for registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland who do not have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent in England, Wales or Northern Ireland will be required to complete a probationary period.
