Probationary Process

Teachers who are eligible for registration may be given a probationary period of up to 270 days to complete. This is particularly the case for newly qualified teachers and applicants who cannot provide evidence of full-time satisfactory teaching service in the relevant subject and sector after the award of a degree and a teaching qualification. We only accept teaching service which has been undertaken after your initial teaching qualification.

All eligible teachers applying for registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland who do not have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent  in England, Wales or Northern Ireland and who have not successfully completed an induction year in the UK,  will be required to complete a period of up to 60 days probationary service in a Scottish school.

Full registration will not be awarded until the probationary period has been satisfactorily completed and a school report has been submitted to the Professional Learning and Development Department at the General Teaching Council for Scotland.

For further information on the probationary process, please visit our  Probationer Teacher Scotland website and click on Flexible Route.
